What to put on a DJ invoice
- The event: type, date, venue and start and end times.
- The performance, by the hour or as a package.
- Equipment: sound, lighting, extra speakers for a ceremony.
- Extras: MC services, custom edits, photo booth.
- Travel beyond your area, and overtime.
- The deposit paid at booking, and when the balance is due.
Most DJs take a non-refundable deposit to hold the date and collect the balance before the event. Put both in your contract and on the invoice.
Frequently asked questions
How much deposit should a DJ take?
Often 25–50% at booking, non-refundable, to hold the date.
Should the balance be paid before or after the event?
Before is safest: a week ahead or on the day before you start. Overtime can be billed afterwards.
Do DJs charge sales tax?
Some states tax entertainment services or equipment rental; many don’t. Check your state.
