What to include
- Measured area and the area ordered, with the waste allowance (usually 5–10%, more for diagonal or patterned layouts).
- Removal and disposal of the old floor.
- Subfloor preparation: leveling, patching, moisture barrier.
- Materials with product, color and lot number if you have it.
- Installation per square foot, separate from materials.
- Trim: transitions, stair nosing, baseboards, quarter round.
- Furniture moving and appliance pulls.
Pricing tips
Price installation by product, since tile takes longer per square foot than floating floors. Stairs are usually priced per step. If the customer supplies the material, say so on the invoice and exclude warranty on the product itself.
Frequently asked questions
How much waste should I add to flooring?
About 5–10% for straight layouts and 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone. Show it on the materials line so the customer understands the quantity.
Is flooring installation taxable?
Often materials are taxed and installation labor isn’t, but it varies by state. Installation lines here are untaxed.
