What to put on a locksmith invoice
- Your license number, where your state licenses locksmiths.
- The service address and time of the call.
- The service call fee, separate from the work.
- The work: lockouts, rekeying per cylinder, installation.
- Hardware and keys, with brand and model.
- That ID was checked before opening a home, car or safe.
Some states license locksmiths, among them California, Texas and Illinois. Quote the total before starting: consumer agencies warn about locksmiths who quote low by phone and charge far more on site, so an itemized invoice that matches your quote protects your reputation.
Frequently asked questions
Should the service call fee be separate?
Yes. It covers getting to the customer and is charged even if the job is small. Say upfront whether it’s credited toward the work.
Is rekeying priced per lock or per cylinder?
Usually per cylinder, since a lockset may have more than one, with keys charged separately.
Should I charge more after hours?
Many locksmiths do. State the after-hours rate when quoting and show it as its own line.
