Per task or by the hour?

Per-task pricing works well for jobs you do often, such as mounting a TV, swapping a fixture or patching a hole: customers like knowing the price, and you’re rewarded for working quickly. Hourly pricing suits jobs you can’t size until you start. Many handymen use both: flat prices for listed tasks, and an hourly rate for anything else, with a minimum charge per visit.

What to include

  • Each task on its own line, so the customer can pick.
  • Materials: supplied by you (at cost plus a markup) or by the customer.
  • Trip fee and minimum charge.
  • What you don’t do: many states require a licensed contractor for electrical, plumbing, or any job above a dollar limit.

Licensing limits

Most states let unlicensed handymen take only small jobs, below a set dollar amount including labor and materials, and keep licensed trades such as electrical and plumbing for licensed contractors. Check your state’s limit before estimating larger jobs. Bill the visit with the handyman invoice template.

Frequently asked questions

Should a handyman charge a trip fee?

Many do, especially for small jobs or long drives. Some waive it when the job is over a certain amount.

What minimum charge do handymen use?

Often one or two hours of labor. It covers travel and setup on jobs that only take a few minutes.

How do I estimate a job I can’t see?

Ask for photos, give a range, and say the final price will be confirmed on site before you start.
