How to price landscaping work
- Sod and seed by the square foot, including soil prep.
- Plants by container size and count; trees by caliper or height.
- Mulch, soil and rock by the cubic yard. One yard covers about 100 sq ft at 3 inches deep.
- Hardscape, such as patios, walls and paths, by the square or linear foot, including base and edging.
- Irrigation by zone.
- Design time as a flat fee, often credited if the client goes ahead.
What to put in the notes
Say what the plant guarantee covers and what it needs from the client (watering, mostly). Note access: if equipment can’t reach the back yard, hand work costs more. Note that utility lines will be marked before digging; in the US, call 811 a few days ahead. If the price depends on the season, say how long it holds.
From one-off job to maintenance
A new landscape is a good moment to offer maintenance. Add a line for a monthly or per-visit plan, priced separately, so the client can say yes to both at once. Bill regular visits with the lawn care invoice template.
Frequently asked questions
How much mulch do I need for an estimate?
Multiply the area in square feet by the depth in inches and divide by 324 to get cubic yards. At 3 inches, 100 sq ft needs just under a yard.
Should a landscaping estimate include sales tax?
It depends on the state. Plants and materials are often taxable; landscaping labor is taxable in some states and not others.
How long should a landscaping estimate be valid?
Thirty days is typical. Plant availability and prices change with the season, so say so if the price depends on planting in a certain window.
