What brokers and shippers check
- Load number and BOL number, exactly as on the rate confirmation.
- Pickup and delivery locations and dates.
- Line haul rate as agreed (flat or per mile).
- Fuel surcharge if it’s separate from the line haul.
- Accessorials: detention, layover, lumper, TONU, extra stops. Each needs approval and, for lumper, a receipt.
- Your MC and USDOT numbers, and remit-to details (your factoring company if you factor).
Get paid faster
Invoice the day you deliver, attach the signed BOL (proof of delivery), the rate confirmation and any receipts, and make every number match. Most payment delays are mismatched load numbers or missing paperwork. If you use a factoring company, put their remit-to address on the invoice as your agreement requires.
Frequently asked questions
What paperwork goes with a trucking invoice?
Usually the signed bill of lading (proof of delivery), the rate confirmation and receipts for any lumper or reimbursed charges.
How do I bill detention?
Per hour after the free time stated on the rate confirmation (often 2 hours), with arrival and departure times. Get the broker’s approval where required.
