What to include
- The milestone being billed and what was delivered or approved.
- Design and development as fixed-price phases, or hours × rate.
- Pass-through costs: hosting, domain, premium plugins or fonts, at cost or with a stated markup.
- Recurring services: maintenance, hosting management, SEO, as their own lines.
- Ownership and transfer terms: when the client owns the code and assets.
Milestone billing for web projects
A common split is a third on signing, a third when the design is approved and a third at launch. Keep the domain and hosting in the client’s name where you can, and say on the invoice whether you’re reselling or passing them through at cost.

Should I invoice for hosting?
If you buy it for the client, yes: as its own line at cost or with a stated markup, and with the renewal date.
