How to price a fence

Measure every run and add them up for the linear footage. Price fencing per linear foot by material and height (wood, vinyl, chain link, aluminum), posts per post or included in the footage, and gates each. Slopes, rock, and tree roots slow the work; note them and price them in.

What to include

  • Linear feet, height and material, with the style (privacy, picket, split rail).
  • Posts: material, spacing and how they’re set.
  • Gates: width, hardware and latch.
  • Removal and disposal of the old fence.
  • Who checks property lines, permits and HOA rules.
  • Utility locating: in the US, call 811 before digging post holes.

Property lines and permits

Fences cause neighbor disputes when they cross a property line. Put in the estimate that the customer is responsible for confirming the line, from a survey or markers, and for HOA approval. Many cities require a permit for fences above a certain height, often 6 feet, and limit front-yard fence heights.

Frequently asked questions

How far apart should fence posts be?

Typically 6 to 8 feet on center for wood privacy fences, matching the panel length.

Should the estimate include staining or sealing?

Offer it as a separate line. New pressure-treated wood often needs to dry for weeks before it will take stain.

Who pays for a shared fence?

That’s between the neighbors. Your estimate should name one customer who is responsible for paying you.
