How to calculate concrete

Multiply length × width × thickness in feet and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. A 20 × 30 ft driveway at 4 inches (0.33 ft) is about 7.4 yards; order 5–10% extra, so 8 yards. Price the concrete per yard, and base, placing and finishing per square foot. Decorative finishes such as stamping, coloring or exposed aggregate cost more and get their own lines.

What to include

  • Dimensions, thickness and strength (psi) of the concrete.
  • Demolition and disposal of what’s there now.
  • Base and reinforcement: gravel depth, rebar or wire mesh, fiber.
  • Finish and joints.
  • Access: if the truck can’t reach, a pump or wheelbarrows cost more.
  • Permits where your city requires them, for example for driveway aprons.
  • Cure time before walking and driving on it.

Cracks and warranties

Concrete cracks; control joints decide where. Say in the notes what your warranty covers (structural failure, settling) and what it doesn’t (hairline cracks, damage from de-icing salts or heavy trucks), so there’s no argument later.

Frequently asked questions

How thick should a concrete driveway be?

Four inches is standard for cars; five or six for heavier vehicles such as trucks and RVs.

Should the estimate price concrete per yard or per square foot?

Both work. Many contractors show the concrete per yard and labor per square foot, so the customer sees what changes if the size or thickness does.

How long is a concrete estimate valid?

Thirty days is typical. Concrete prices change, and the season affects scheduling.
