Estimating machined parts
Separate one-time costs (programming, setup, fixtures, first-article inspection) from per-part costs (cycle time, material, finishing). That makes quantity breaks easy to show: per-part price falls as setup spreads across more parts. Reference the drawing and revision, the material, tolerances and finish. State the lead time from purchase order.
Frequently asked questions
How do I show quantity breaks?
Give unit prices at several quantities, such as 10, 100 and 500, with setup spread across them.
Should setup be separate?
Yes, on first orders; repeat orders may not need it.
What if the drawing changes?
Re-estimate; the estimate applies to the stated revision only.
