Quote or estimate for construction?
A quote (or fixed bid) is a price you commit to for a defined scope; an estimate is your best guess. Quote only when the drawings and specifications are complete, and protect yourself with clear exclusions, allowances for undecided selections, and a rule that changes go through written change orders. Use the construction estimate template for early budgets.
Bid on public or commercial work with the form the owner requires; this template suits residential and small commercial jobs.
From accepted quote to invoice
A quote is a fixed offer: once the client accepts it in writing, by signing it or replying to say yes, both sides are bound by its price and scope. Keep the accepted copy. When the work is done, open the quote in the free quote maker and switch it to Invoice, or start from the construction invoice template. Anything the client added later goes on its own line.
Frequently asked questions
How do I protect a fixed-price construction quote?
Base it on dated plans, list exclusions and allowances, and require written change orders for anything outside the scope.
How long should a construction quote be valid?
Often 30 days, sometimes less when lumber or steel prices are moving.
Should the payment schedule be in the quote?
Yes. Tie payments to milestones (foundation, framing, rough-in, completion), not dates, and check your state’s deposit limits.
