Writing a collision estimate
Body shops estimate in labor hours by type (body, refinish, frame, mechanical) at the shop’s rates, plus parts and paint materials. Name each part as OEM, aftermarket or used: several states require that disclosure. Hidden damage usually appears at teardown, so tell the customer and insurer a supplement may follow. For mechanical repairs, use the auto repair estimate template.
Frequently asked questions
What is a supplement?
An added estimate for damage found after the vehicle is taken apart, sent to the insurer for approval.
Must I say if parts are aftermarket?
Many states require it on the estimate. Name each part’s type.
Who pays the deductible?
The customer pays it to the shop; the insurer pays the rest of the approved estimate.
