Quote or estimate at the repair shop
A quote gives a fixed price for a known repair, which is good for brakes, belts, fluids and other common jobs. When diagnosis may uncover more, give an estimate and get approval before going over it; several states, including California, require written authorization for repair work and any additional charges. Name parts as new, used or rebuilt, and keep the signed copy.
From accepted quote to invoice
A quote is a fixed offer: once the client accepts it in writing, by signing it or replying to say yes, both sides are bound by its price and scope. Keep the accepted copy. When the work is done, open the quote in the free quote maker and switch it to Invoice, or start from the mechanic invoice template. Anything the client added later goes on its own line.
Frequently asked questions
Can I charge more than the quote?
Only for additional work the customer approves, with the approval recorded. The quoted repairs stay at the quoted price.
Should parts and labor be separate?
For a fixed-price quote you can combine them per repair; list them separately if your state requires itemized parts.
How long should a repair quote be valid?
About a week; parts prices and availability change.
