Estimating masonry work
Price walls, veneers and repointing per square foot, and chimneys, steps and columns as units. State the materials (brick, block, natural or manufactured stone) and mortar type, and how you’ll match existing brick and mortar color, which customers care about. Scaffolding and access are significant costs on tall walls and chimneys. Retaining walls over about 4 feet often need engineering and a permit.
Frequently asked questions
Can you match old brick?
Often closely, not always exactly. Say so, and offer salvaged brick where possible.
What is repointing?
Removing deteriorated mortar joints and refilling them with new mortar.
Should weather delays be mentioned?
Yes; mortar can’t be laid in freezing or very wet conditions.
