What to include in a plumbing estimate
- Your license number and the scope in plain words.
- Materials named: pipe type (PEX, copper), fixture and water heater models.
- Access: how many openings in walls or ceilings, and whether they’re patched, textured and painted.
- Downtime: how long the water will be off.
- Permit and inspection.
- What’s excluded, such as painting, fixtures supplied by the owner, or problems found behind walls.
Pricing plumbing jobs
Service calls and repairs are often priced flat rate from a price book. Larger jobs such as repipes, remodels and sewer lines are estimated from fixture counts, pipe runs and access, with an allowance for what can’t be seen. For anything behind walls or underground, state the assumption the price rests on, and how surprises will be handled.
Turning the estimate into the invoice
Bill the finished job with the plumbing invoice template and the same lines. If the job changed, add the extra work as its own lines with a note that the customer approved it, and when.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a plumbing estimate valid?
Thirty days is common. Water heater and copper prices move, so shorten it if your supplier prices are changing.
Should I charge for a plumbing estimate?
Free estimates are usual for planned work. Diagnostic visits for leaks or clogs are usually charged as a service call.
What if I find more damage once the wall is open?
Stop, show the customer, and get written approval for the extra work and price before going on. Note it on the invoice.
