What an electrical estimate should show
- Your license number, which most states require on bids and invoices.
- Labor and materials on separate lines, with the brand of panel, fixtures or charger.
- Wire runs and circuits: amperage and length, with what happens if the run is longer than expected.
- Permit, inspection and utility coordination.
- Patching: whether drywall openings are repaired and painted, or left for others.
- Code corrections: how existing problems found during the job will be priced.
Flat rate or time and materials
Common jobs such as panel swaps, outlets, fixtures and EV chargers suit flat-rate pricing: the client knows the price and you’re rewarded for working efficiently. Troubleshooting and old wiring suit time and materials with an estimate of hours and a not-to-exceed figure. Either way, list major materials so the client can see what they’re getting.
After the job
When the inspection passes, bill the job with the electrician invoice template, quoting the estimate number. If the client qualifies for a rebate or tax credit, for example for an EV charger, list the equipment model on the invoice; programs usually ask for it.
Frequently asked questions
Do electricians charge for estimates?
Many give free estimates for straightforward jobs. Troubleshooting visits are usually charged as a service call, sometimes credited against the repair.
Should the permit be on the estimate?
Yes, as its own line. It shows the work will be inspected and avoids arguments about who pays for it.
Is electrical work taxed?
Materials are taxable in many states; labor depends on the state and on whether the work counts as a repair or a capital improvement.
