Measuring and pricing siding
Measure each wall’s area, subtract large openings, and divide by 100 for squares. Add 10–15% waste depending on how cut-up the walls are. Price removal, wrap and installation per square, trim per opening or linear foot, and soffit and fascia per linear foot. Name the siding product and profile, since homeowners compare by product.
What to spell out
- The product: vinyl, fiber cement, wood or metal, brand and color.
- Sheathing: you can’t see it until the siding is off, so price repairs per sheet.
- Older homes: houses built before 1978 may have lead paint under the siding, which requires lead-safe work practices.
- Warranty: the manufacturer’s and yours.
Frequently asked questions
What is a square of siding?
100 square feet of wall coverage, the same unit used for roofing.
Should I remove the old siding or go over it?
Removal lets you inspect and repair the sheathing and is usually recommended. If you install over it, say so and price accordingly.
Is painting needed with new siding?
Vinyl and pre-finished products don’t need it; primed fiber cement does. State which in the estimate.
