Estimating excavation
Calculate cubic yards from the dimensions (length × width × depth in feet ÷ 27), then price digging, hauling and fill. Add mobilization and equipment time, and say what happens if you hit rock, water or unsuitable soil. Call 811 to have utilities marked before digging; it’s required by law in every state. Include erosion control where required.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate cubic yards?
Multiply length, width and depth in feet and divide by 27.
Why price rock separately?
It needs different equipment and much more time; you can’t see it until you dig.
Is soil swell accounted for?
Excavated soil takes up 20–30% more room loose; allow for it in hauling.
