Estimating tile work
Price labor per square foot by area, with more for walls, small tile, large-format tile and patterns like herringbone. Prep, waterproofing and backer board are separate lines. Say who supplies the tile, and ask the owner to order 10–15% extra for cuts and breakage. For full bathroom projects, see the bathroom remodel estimate template.
Frequently asked questions
Why does small tile cost more?
More cuts and grout lines take more time per square foot.
How much extra tile to order?
10% for simple layouts, 15–20% for diagonal and herringbone patterns.
Is waterproofing needed?
In showers and wet areas, yes; tile and grout alone aren’t waterproof.
