What to include in a tree service estimate
- Each tree: species, approximate height and diameter, and where it is.
- The work: removal, crown thinning, raising, deadwood, cabling.
- How it will be done: climbing and rigging, bucket truck or crane.
- Stump grinding, priced per inch of diameter or per stump.
- Cleanup: chips, logs and brush hauled, left, or cut to firewood length.
- Insurance and any permits.
Pricing risk
Size isn’t the only factor. A tree over a house, near power lines or out of reach of a truck takes longer and carries more risk; price it accordingly and say why. Never prune near energized lines unless you’re qualified to; the utility usually handles trees touching service lines.
Permits and protected trees
Many cities protect large or heritage trees and require a permit to remove them, sometimes with replacement planting. Say on the estimate who obtains the permit. Bill the job with the lawn care invoice template or the service invoice template.
Frequently asked questions
How is stump grinding priced?
Usually per inch of diameter at ground level, often with a minimum per stump. Grinding depth and chip removal are worth stating.
Should the estimate say whether the crew is insured?
Yes. Tree work is high risk, and customers and their insurers often ask for proof of liability and workers’ compensation coverage.
What if the tree is on the property line?
Have both owners agree in writing before work starts, and name the customer paying you on the estimate.
