Pricing interior design
Designers charge in a few ways: a flat fee per room or phase, hourly, a percentage of the project budget, or a markup on furnishings bought through them. Whatever you use, separate the design fee from purchases, say how purchases are billed (at cost plus a procurement fee, or at retail), and require deposits on custom orders, which usually can’t be returned.
From accepted quote to invoice
A quote is a fixed offer: once the client accepts it in writing, by signing it or replying to say yes, both sides are bound by its price and scope. Keep the accepted copy. When the work is done, open the quote in the free quote maker and switch it to Invoice, or start from the consulting invoice template. Anything the client added later goes on its own line.
Frequently asked questions
Should furniture be on the design quote?
List it separately, on its own proposal once selections are made, so the client approves the design fee first.
Do interior designers charge sales tax?
Furnishings resold to the client are usually taxable; the design fee is taxable in some states. Check your state.
How do I handle extra rooms or changes?
Quote them as additions, or bill at your hourly rate beyond the agreed scope.
